Elias Grandy’s artistry, driven by irresistible energy and sustained by profound musicianship, continues to bring fresh life to the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg. The 36-year-old conductor enters his second season as the company’s General Music Director determined to develop its already fine ensemble of singers and build its reputation as one of Germany’s most fascinating centres for music theatre.
Grandy attracted worldwide attention in 2015 with his prize-winning performance in the final of the biennial International Conductors’ Competition Sir Georg Solti. He has since underlined his status among the leading conductors of his generation with outstanding performances in Heidelberg and as conductor of Stars von morgen, a primetime series on Arte TV.
At the beginning of 2012 Elias Grandy became Kapellmeister at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. His performances with the company embraced everything from Monteverdi and Mozart to Puccini and Verdi, and secured widespread critical acclaim. He was appointed General Music Director of the Theatre and Orchestra of Heidelberg in 2014 and began his official tenure in September 2015 with a new production of Le nozze di Figaro.
Grandy has since conducted Der fliegende Holländer and the world premiere of Johannes Kalitzke’s Pym in Heidelberg. He is set to open the company’s 2016-17 season in September with a new staging of Die Zauberflöte and introduce Hans Georg Haas’s Morgen und Abend to its repertoire next March. He will also conduct revivals of La bohème and Hänsel und Gretel.
Current and future highlights of Elias Grandy’s 2016-17 schedule include appearances with Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg, Deutches Kammerorchester Berlin, Hofer Symphoniker, Frankfurter Museumsorchester, Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie, and Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.
