Haus Marteau

is the International Music Retreat of the district of Upper Franconia.

The Haus Marteau is a unique institution for musical education in Europe. It combines modern teaching conditions with the museum-like atmosphere of the artist's villa of the world-famous violin virtuoso Henri Marteau. Haus Marteau is located in the small town of Lichtenberg on the border between Franconia and Thuringia.

HENRI MARTEAU - A VIRTUOSO

Henri Marteau,
the competition's namesake

Henri Marteau was born in 1874 in Reims as the son of the textile manufacturer Charles Marteau and his wife Clara. His parents received the European elite from the arts and sciences in their salon, where, at the age of five, Henri met Ernesto Camillo Sivori, a pupil of Niccolò Paganini. Sivori provided the enthusiastic child with a small violin and his first lessons. Marteau made his debut as a prodigy in 1884 in Reims before an audience of 2000. In 1887, he fascinated Johannes Brahms, the press, and the public at a concert of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna.…..

The patron of the 9th International Violin Competition Henri Marteau is the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Dr. Markus Söder.
Thereby, he supports the Competition and its artistic aims and underlines the importance of musical education.

The next competition will take place in Lichtenberg and Hof from April 26 to May 9, 2026.

The goals of the competition are to encourage highly skilled young musicians on their way to an international career and to underline the importance of musical education for young people, to contribute to international understanding, to enable the exchange between young talented musicians and to recollect the name and work of the grand violinist Henri Marteau.
